Über das Weingut Bodegas Ponce

In den fast unendlichen Weiten der La Mancha, ca 160km nordwestlich von Valencia, liegt die Bodegas Ponce. Geleitet wird das Weingut in zweiter Generation von Juan Antionio, einem önologischen Ausnahmetalent, das bereits mit 17 Jahren seinen Abschluss als Önologe erzielte. Im einem der wohl verlassensten und ärmsten Ecken Spaniens setzte er sich zum Ziel das Weingut seines Vaters zum Vorreiter der Region zu machen. Das ist ihm eindrucksvoll gelungen. Seine Rotweine (aus der eher seltenen Rebsorte Bobal) und seine Weißweine aus dem hiesigen Albillo Clon (hier Albilla genannt), ließen die Fachwelt innerhalb kurzer Zeit aufhorchen.

Über den Wein La Estrecha 2018

Der La Estrecha (übersetzt "die schmale") ist ein fast reinsortiger Bobal. Bobal...? mögen Sie sich jetzt fragen. Nun, Bobal ist eine der meistangebauten Rebsorten Spaniens. Und leider eine der vernachlässigsten. Fast nur zu Industrieweinen und Massenweinen ausgebaut, kann sie in Einzellagen zu grandiosen Weinen heranreifen. Der Meister des Bobal ist unzweifelhaft Juan Antionio und sein Meisterstück ist der La Estrecha, bis auf den extrem seltenen "Ponce Ponce", der höchstbewertete Bobal der Welt. Der Name des Weines stammt von der speziellen Zuchtform der Reben in schmalen Reihen und Clustern, die zwar mühsame Weinbergsarbeit erfordert, aber für gegenseitigen Schutz vor der sengenden Sonne Südspaniens sorgt. Der La Estrecha ist ein Monument des spanischen Weinbaus und im Wine Advocate 9/2020 vergab Parkers Verkoster für spanischen Wein, Luis Gutiérrez, die Weltklasse-Note von:

The single-vineyard 2018 La Estrecha comes from a plot on granite soils that was planted mostly with Bobal but also with some 5% other grapes from Manchuela, the way vineyards were traditionally planted in the past. The objective here is to show finesse, and they achieved it through moderate alcohol (12.5%) and good freshness following the usual modus operandi: native fermentation of the full clusters in 4,500-liter oak vats and 11 months in 600-liter French barrels. This is always a more elegant expression of Bobal, while, for example, the Pino has more concentration and power. The color is a light ruby, and the nose is an explosion of flowers and aromatic herbs, mixing Mediterranean and continental characteristics, somehow balsamic but also flinty/stony. This is a little more reductive, and the wine might welcome an energetic decanting if you open it soon (this seems to happen more on the wines from granite soils). The palate has great balance, with lots of energy and inner power, linear and long, with almost citrus freshness and a dry, stony/mineral finish. This should develop nicely for a long time in bottle. The great vintages tend to be more austere early on. 2,500 bottles were filled in August 2019.

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the winery, the Ponce family has released from the excellent 2018 vintage a new top of the range that carries their surname. The family owns 50 hectares in the villages of Iniesta, Villanueva de la Jara, Villamalea and Mahora, from which they produce 120,000 bottles of some of the best wines from Manchuela. 2018 is an exceptional vintage, which Juan Antonio Ponce compares with 2008, 2010 or 2013, with lower alcohol and more elegant wines. 2019 is a very good year, very Mediterranean, with a warm summer and a cold spell during the harvest that perhaps produced more immediate wines than 2018, a little in the style of 2016 or 2017.
