Über das Weingut Bodegas Ponce

In den fast unendlichen Weiten der La Mancha, ca 160km nordwestlich von Valencia, liegt die Bodegas Ponce. Geleitet wird das Weingut in zweiter Generation von Juan Antionio, einem önologischen Ausnahmetalent, das bereits mit 17 Jahren seinen Abschluss als Önologe erzielte. Im einem der wohl verlassensten und ärmsten Ecken Spaniens setzte er sich zum Ziel das Weingut seines Vaters zum Vorreiter der Region zu machen. Das ist ihm eindrucksvoll gelungen. Seine Rotweine (aus der eher seltenen Rebsorte Bobal) und seine Weißweine aus dem hiesigen Albillo Clon (hier Albilla genannt), ließen die Fachwelt innerhalb kurzer Zeit aufhorchen.

Über den Wein P.F. Bobal 2022

P.F. oder ausgeschrieben Pie Franco bedeutet übersetzt "echter Fuß". Und das sagt bereits viel über den P.F. von Ponce aus. Er ist einer der wenigen Weine Europas, der noch aus einer wurzelechten Rebe erzeugt wird. Im Gegensatz zu diesen ist der P.F. der nicht auf reblausresistente Wurzeln gepfropft, sondern entwickelt als wurzelechte Rebe das natürlich möglichste Aroma. Tatsächlich gibt es in Europa nur sehr wenige Regionen, in der wurzelechte Reben existieren, die nicht von der Reblaus heimgesucht werden können. Voraussetzung dafür sit sandiger Boden und große Hitze, also genau was man in der DO Manchuela antrifft.

Der P.F. ist ein reinsortiger Bobal. Bobal...? mögen Sie sich jetzt fragen. Nun, Bobal ist eine der meistangebauten Rebsorten Spaniens. Und leider eine der vernachlässigsten. Fast nur zu Industrieweinen und Massenweinen ausgebaut, kann sie in Einzellagen zu grandiosen Weinen heranreifen. Der Meister des Bobal ist unzweifelhaft Juan Antionio und einer seiner besten Weine ist der P.F., der sich nicht hinter den seltenen Einzellagenweinen La Estrecha und Ponce Ponce verstecken muss. Im Wine Advocate 1/2024 vergab Parkers Verkoster für spanischen Wein, Luis Gutiérrez, die herausragende Note von:

The 2022 P.F. has the depth and seriousness of the ungrafted vines and the balance of what they consider a great vintage for them. It has 13.5% alcohol, and it's juicy and has round tannins after fermenting and maturing in 4,500-liter oak vats for 10 months. It feels super balanced, serious, with depth and complexity, subtle, nicely integrated, fine-boned and balanced. This feels more harmonious, more than most of the rest of 2022s. It's tasty, subtle and elegant. These last few vintages are a lot more elegant and less rustic than the wines were in the past, and the tannins are fine-grained and round. 18,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2023.

Juan Antonio Ponce has started buying land to plant new vineyards in Manchuela, a total of 17 new hectares from 2022, going for higher altitudes for whites, as they are going to plant Albilla, Garnacha and Monastrell, the grapes that are scarce in Manchuela. That will take him to around 70 hectares of vines. Current production averages 200,000 bottles.

I tasted the wines from 2021 and 2022. 2021 was a rainy year (with snow too) and allowed them to produce intense wines with contained alcohol. 2021 was a great vintage for whites. They believe 2022 is the best vintage for them so far, which he deems "classical" in the zone, with abundant winter and spring rains and a warm and dry summer with some rain in late September that allowed the wines to keep normal alcohol levels with finesse, elegance, balance and the Mediterranean character. In terms of wines, he is releasing a new top-of-the-range white from 2022.
