Über das Weingut Bodegas Ponce

In den fast unendlichen Weiten der La Mancha, ca 160km nordwestlich von Valencia, liegt die Bodegas Ponce. Geleitet wird das Weingut in zweiter Generation von Juan Antionio, einem önologischen Ausnahmetalent, das bereits mit 17 Jahren seinen Abschluss als Önologe erzielte. Im einem der wohl verlassensten und ärmsten Ecken Spaniens setzte er sich zum Ziel das Weingut seines Vaters zum Vorreiter der Region zu machen. Das ist ihm eindrucksvoll gelungen. Seine Rotweine (aus der eher seltenen Rebsorte Bobal) und seine Weißweine aus dem hiesigen Albillo Clon (hier Albilla genannt), ließen die Fachwelt innerhalb kurzer Zeit aufhorchen.

Über den Wein Reto 2018

Der Reto, ein reinsortiger Wein aus der autochthonen Rebsorte Albilla (einem Albillo-Clon) hat in der Fachwelt für Furore gesorgt. Jahr für Jahr gehört er zu den besten Weißweinen Spaniens und in 2018 hat er seine bisher höchste Vollendung gefunden. Mit seiner Frische, Mineralität und Spritzigkeit erinnert er mehr an einen Riesling, als einen fetten Weißwein aus extrem heißem Anbaugebiet. Ein genialer Wurf dun ein großartiger Beweis dafür, dass Weltklasse-Weißweine in fast allen Klimagebieten erzeugt werden können... das richtige Lesegut und höchste handwerkliche Fähigkeit vorausgesetzt. I also tasted the white 2018 Reto, from a cooler year than 2017 that resulted in slightly lower alcohol and higher acidity. This is a vintage that represents the style of white they aim for—fresh, complex and mineral, with an austere profile and integrated oak. It's still a baby and shows more primary notes of freshly cut grass and aromatic herbs, but the core is the striking minerality and the spark of the granite soils. This has a cool-climate profile, with marked acidity, that should keep the wine alive in bottle for a good 5 years or more. It's at a very similar quality level as the 2017 I tasted next to it...perhaps a little better! One of the freshest Mediterranean whites from Spain. The price is simply unbelievable. And I'm sure it's going to be incredibly long lived, especially after I tasted the 2011. 15,000 bottles were filled in March 2019.

The Ponce family, quality leaders in Manchuela, have a brand new winery that was first used for the 2017 vintage. That warm year, where they saw 30% less grapes, was much better in the Mediterranean strip of Spain than in the central appellations like Rioja or Ribera del Duero. I also tasted some 2018s that were bottled early, from a much cooler year with good acidity and less alcohol.

They have oak vats of 1,500, 4,500, 5,000, 10,000 and 15,000 liters and 600-liter French oak barrels for the fermentation and aging of the wines from their 50 hectares of vineyards in the villages of Iniesta, Villanueva de la Jara, Villamalea and Casa de las Monjas that result in 120,000 bottles they produce each year. These are among the best value wines from Spain, and I think the scores reflect wines that are worth a lot more than what they cost.
