Über das Weingut Bodegas Ponce

In den fast unendlichen Weiten der La Mancha, ca 160km nordwestlich von Valencia, liegt die Bodegas Ponce. Geleitet wird das Weingut in zweiter Generation von Juan Antionio, einem önologischen Ausnahmetalent, das bereits mit 17 Jahren seinen Abschluss als Önologe erzielte. Im einem der wohl verlassensten und ärmsten Ecken Spaniens setzte er sich zum Ziel das Weingut seines Vaters zum Vorreiter der Region zu machen. Das ist ihm eindrucksvoll gelungen. Seine Rotweine (aus der eher seltenen Rebsorte Bobal) und seine Weißweine aus dem hiesigen Albillo Clon (hier Albilla genannt), ließen die Fachwelt innerhalb kurzer Zeit aufhorchen.

Über den Wein Tinto 2018

Der in vornehmer Untertreibung genannte Tinto (oder auch Ponce Ponce genannt) ist das Flaggschiff der Bodegas. Ein fast reinsortiger Bobal mit unglaublichem Bouquet. Bobal...? mögen Sie sich jetzt fragen. Nun, Bobal ist eine der meistangebauten Rebsorten Spaniens. Und leider eine der vernachlässigsten. Fast nur zu Industrieweinen und Massenweinen ausgebaut, kann sie in Einzellagen zu grandiosen Weinen heranreifen. Der Meister des Bobal ist unzweifelhaft Juan Antionio und sein Meisterstück ist der Tinto, der höchstbewertete Bobal der Welt. Der Tinto ist ein Monument des spanischen Weinbaus und im Wine Advocate 9/2020 vergab Parkers Verkoster für spanischen Wein, Luis Gutiérrez, die Weltklasse-Note von:

Der Wortlaut der Lobeshymne lautet:

After 15 years of searching, they have come up with a blend of 85% Bobal and 15% Moravia Agria that they thought worthy of carrying their surname, which is what the new top of the range 2018 Ponce is. It was produced with grapes from a vineyard in Villanueva de la Jara planted with Bobal and Moravia Agria on stony soils with sand and limestone mother rock (tosca). They vinified the two varieties separately and then selected the two 600-liter barrels that showed more elegance and finesse. After fermenting with 100% full clusters and indigenous yeasts, the wine from those barrels was kept longer with the lees in a 4,500-liter oak vat. What came to my mind was Monty Python: "And now for something completely different!" It's only 12.5% alcohol, and the color is surprisingly light, almost like a Trousseau from the Jura. The nose is reticent, insinuating and nuanced, shy rather than showy but with detail and changing by the minute. Wet chalk, flowers, herbs and a smoky/flinty touch develop slowly. The palate reveals great inner strength, energy and light, focused and precise, with beautiful symmetry. There is rusticity, elegance and length, chalky and with an almost salty finish. This has to be the most elegant wine ever produced by Ponce and possibly the most elegant Bobal ... in the world? This is more Burgundian than Rhône. It has all the ingredients and balance to develop nicely and for a long time in bottle. 1,991 bottles were filled in February 2020. There will also be a white Ponce in the future.

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the winery, the Ponce family has released from the excellent 2018 vintage a new top of the range that carries their surname. The family owns 50 hectares in the villages of Iniesta, Villanueva de la Jara, Villamalea and Mahora, from which they produce 120,000 bottles of some of the best wines from Manchuela. 2018 is an exceptional vintage, which Juan Antonio Ponce compares with 2008, 2010 or 2013, with lower alcohol and more elegant wines. 2019 is a very good year, very Mediterranean, with a warm summer and a cold spell during the harvest that perhaps produced more immediate wines than 2018, a little in the style of 2016 or 2017.
