94-96/100 Punkte
Der Wortlaut der Lobeshymne lautet:
When seen last summer, the 2022 Cairanne L'Estevenas looked like it would be a blend of 80% Syrah (planted in 1961) and 20% Grenache. It features stunning aromas of licorice, blueberries and blackberries. Full-bodied, creamy and lush on the palate, it finishes long and silky, with hints of black olive lending a welcome savory edge.
Tracing a lineage of grape growing in Cairanne back to 1692, Denis Alary and his son Jean-Etienne represent the 10th and 11th generations of this family-owned domaine. After doing vintages at Seresin (New Zealand) and Henschke (Australia), Jean-Etienne's first vintage as winemaker in the domaine was 2016, an auspicious start. Vintages since have offered considerably more challenging conditions, but the father-and-son team have weathered them all, consistently turning out high-quality wines, even if yields have sometimes been low.
About one-fourth of the estate is now devoted to white wines, as the market seems receptive to them. Weather can be a challenge, however. "In 2022, we picked really early, starting on August 17," said Jean-Etienne. "The objective was to keep freshness. In a hot vintage, it's better to have a normal crop." The larger crop will slow ripening and allow for longer hang times. The 2022 vintage also was the first time that the team harvested at night, also to preserve freshness.
Ripeness—without overdoing it—is a feature of the estate's red wines. In 2021, said Jean-Etienne, "A lot of people were worried about rain, and they had finished picking when we started to pick our Grenache." The result is a set of strong wines from a difficult vintage, and even better wines to come in 2022. There's even a new bottling, from a parcel of Grenache planted in 1961 and previously farmed by a relative who sent the grapes to the local co-op. Alary's 2022 Cairanne le Bassin is a remarkable Grenache, worth a search of the market, given that prices at this pacesetting domaine have remained relatively stable.
