Nordöstlich der alten Paspt-Residenz von Avignon liegt die Apellation Rasteau, eine der Top-Lagen im großen Verbund der Rhône Appelationen. Seit 1979 bewirtschaften dort das Vater-Sohn Gespann André und Frédéric Roméro die Domaine Soumade. Anfangs verkaufte André seine Trauben an umliegende Winzer und Negociants, beovr er sich 1990 entschloss, unter eigenem Namen zu vinifizieren.

Über den Wein Rasteau Cuvee Confiance 2016

Die Cuvée Confiance ist einer der beiden Top-Weine der Domaine und stellt mit seiner unglaublichen Qualität wohl einen der besten Weinwerte Frankreichs dar. Sie ist eine typische Rhônes-Cuvée aus den klassischen südfranzösischen Rebsorten Grenache, Syrah und Mourvèdre.

Nearly as great as the Fleur, the 2016 Rasteau Cuvee Confiance is 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah. Raspberry and mint notes appear on the nose, followed by a full-bodied, rich, velvety wine with a never-ending finish. Despite the incredible richness and concentration, the wine remains fresh and fragrant, lithe and agile, turning silky and lingering. It's another tremendous effort from the Romero family.

Founder André Romero is in semi-retirement, having passed the reins to his son Frédéric, but he still managed to come by the winery during my visit to check up on things. The trend here is toward using more foudres for the élevage, with Stockinger the preferred supplier. According to Frédéric, the 40-hectoliter size works best, the 12-hectoliter size is "OK," and demi-muids are "too small." As the work revolves largely around super ripe Grenache, one of the requirements is to maintain freshness, so this philosophy makes sense. In addition to the 2016s and 2017s, we tasted several back vintages. While the 2008 (reviewed this issue) is nearing the end of its life, wines from stronger vintages, like the 2007 Fleur de Confiance (rated 96 points in Issue 229) and the 2010 Cuvée Confiance (95, this issue), are in no danger of tipping over.
