Knipser's 2016 Im Grossen Garten Spätburgunder GG is pure and fine yet very intense on the deep, complex and fascinating nose. The palate is very intense, incredibly fresh and tight and reveals a nervy and grippy finish with exciting tension. This is a great German Pinot Noir that ranks among the very best. Tasted in Wiesbaden in August 2020.

These notes are, so to speak, a "down payment" on what is still in preparation: verticals of the Riesling GG from the Steinbuckel and the fantastic Pinot Noir RdP, which is one of the best red wines in Germany. Also in preparation: the Kallstadter Saumagen Rieslings from Stephan Knipser's and Bernd Philippi's "Saumagen GbR." My visit to the charismatic domaine Knipser in Laumersheim was scheduled for just over two hours, during which I didn't want to taste another 40 wines, the more so since the family told me about the death of Palatinate icon Bernd Philippi, who passed away just a few days before and with whom I shared unforgettable hours in Kallstadt as well as in the Vinho Verde and Douro in Portugal.
