Wine Advocate November 2022 (Luis Gutierrez)
95/100
The superb 2021 Guarda Colección de Viñedos Chardonnay has to be the finest vintage for this wine, which winemaker Juan Roby described early on quite well, "they have fine and elegant aromas, moderate alcohol and a very fresh palate." Indeed, the wine has amazing parameters—13.1% alcohol, a pH of 3.31 and 6.9 grams of acidity—and has the wilderness and nuance and especially the tasty and salty mouthfeel from the limestone Gualtallary soils, coming through as elegant, nuanced, balanced and sharp, with varietal, spicy, herbal and citrus flavors. This is a true bargain. 8,750 bottles were filled in February 2022.
I tasted a very fine sample of the Lagarde portfolio, except for one wine that was marred by animal aromas. The Pescarmona family has some of their vineyards, the ones in Mayo Drummond, 32 hectares including some centenary vines, certified organic, from the 280 or so total hectares they have in different parts of Mendoza. They make 1.2 million liters of wine per year, which can represent 1.5 million bottles or so.
I also had the chance to taste a handful of wines when I later visited their winery, including a promising barrel sample from a new Primeras Viñas that will be a D.O.C. Luján de Cuyo wine produced with Malbec from Drummond that was peachy, floral and juicy, keeping the tradition but aged in 500-liter barrels to keep the purity of fruit from the place.
