Über das Weingut Max Ferd. Richter

From 80-year-old vines predominantly from the original Sonnenuhr plot below the sundial, the 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett opens with still reductive, sulfuric yet also beautifully floral, bright and elegant fruit aromas that indicate remarkable delicacy. Round and finessed on the elegant and refined palate, this is a very intense, sweet and persistently salty-mineral WSU with great finesse and length. Persistently salty. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

Once again Constantin Richter has presented a series of excellent and world-class Rieslings, of which many are sweet and PQR superstars, like the sweet Kabinett Rieslings from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr and the Graacher Himmelreich or the Mülheimer Sonnenlay Riesling Alte Reben feinherb. Richter is improving his dry wines as well, and some 2019s are already great, such as the Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling GG "Uralte Reben" trocken and the Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling GG trocken. He is also a master of Spätlese and Auslese, and these don't cost a fortune. If I could, I would always praise MFR as one of the domains that is producing exceptional wines for often very moderate prices. In the past few years, the export-orientated domaine has become more and more known in Germany as well, which is a good thing after so many world markets are suffering under the COVID-19 pandemic and have reduced their orders.

The 2019 vintage was the main focus of my tasting, which also included relevant 2018s that are still in the markets. 2019 had a dry and warm summer that was not quite as hot as 2018 but not without sunburn damage. Overall, the yield was reduced by 30%, although there were cooler periods and even rain showers. "The material was great. We didn't have nearly as much botrytis as 2018, but where it occurred, it was early and combined with top acidity. Later, after the rain, which started around October 10, we had to discard the noble rot grapes. Fortunately, we were almost done with the harvest by then." It started around September 20th and lasted for 3.5 weeks. The result is a TBA (instead of two as in 2018), one Auslese *** (as in 2018), no Auslese ** (as in 2018) and no BA. "Actually, 2019 was a perfect vintage, except for the quantity," Richter thinks. "You could do everything and everything very typical, with a cool style despite the sun. It was relaxed work in the vineyard as well as in the cellar. I would even take this vintage again anytime if I only could." Stylistically, the 2019 vintage reminds Constantin Richter of of the 2001s. "Like the 2019s, those wines combine their balanced maturity with fresh acidity."
